KAVAK MINE
Kavak is TMS's largest and oldest mine and it has been operational since 1930. Kavak Mine is presently one of the deepest chrome ore mines in the world. Typical annual production is 20,000 tons of saleable concentrates as well as some amount of saleable lumpy ores. Highest production was made in 1971 as 163,055 tons of raw ore, 72,900 tons of concentrate ore. So far the total amount of production is approximately 5,844,201 tons, from which 2,470,121 tons of saleable concentrate ore and lumpy products are obtained.
The concentrator which is presently active in Kavak Mine was initially established in Dağardı in1920’s. This plant, which is the first chrome ore concentrator in Turkey was dismantled and transported from Dağardı Mine when Dağardı was closed. After having necessary modernization and capacity enlargement it has been re-established in Kavak in 1948. It still yields high-quality concentrate (min 49% Cr2O3). The Kavak Mine exports its production from The Derince Port, which is located 85 km. away from İstanbul.
